Alternative fuels that are being considered for the fueling of vehicles is things such as biofuel, alcohol, hydrogen and so on. However, the use of liquid nitrogen is one that people should be considering as the main contender for many reasons. First off, if we were able to run cars off of liquid nitrogen, since the air that we breathe is significantly made up on nitrogen, the car would have nearly zero emissions that are put into the area. The other sources of alternative fuels reduce the emissions that are put out when compared to fossil fuels, however, liquid nitrogen really does take the prize when it comes to emission levels. Another huge plus for nitrogen is that is does not have the dangers that other kinds of fuels have. Which means that if nitrogen were used in a vehicle that was in an accident, the chances of the car catching fire due to the fuel is highly unlikely. This could dramatically reduce the number of deaths that happen each year due to explosions from fuels that are used in vehicles.

There are a few drawbacks to using nitrogen. The biggest drawback is that it is not easily as available as hydrogen. This means that the cost that is passed onto those consumers of nitrogen could be significance. In an economy, in which people are trying to save as much money as possible, the chances of doing this with liquid nitrogen as the main source of fuel is pretty much nonexistent. But how does liquid nitrogen actually work to power the vehicle?

The liquid nitrogen is held in a tank, much like any other fuel would be held. The liquid is then heated and through this heat a gas is produced that can run the engine. It is very simple, and there have been vehicles that have been demonstrating just how easy it would be to use liquid nitrogen as a fuel source. However, there are some issues with using it. There would have to be a heating device added onto the car, which could increase the prices of the cars that are on the market. With this system of liquid nitrogen, hybrid cars that have batteries could also be used, with the liquid nitrogen giving power to the batteries in order to keep the vehicle moving and running. One of the biggest issues with the use of liquid nitrogen is the fact that in cold weather it may not perform as well since the heating aspect of the car will have a harder time of turning the liquid nitrogen into gas to be used. Especially for those that live in cooler environments.

Overall, liquid nitrogen is a promising fuel in order to replace fossil fuels and take away the dependency that we have on these depleting fossil fuels. However, there is much more research to be done yet, and is why that people should not write liquid nitrogen off of the list as valuable alternative fuel sources.
